ROGER LINN
MUSIC TECH LEGEND & INVENTOR
Future of Music Tech – Icon Interview with the creator of the first digital drum machine, the Akai MPC, Linn Drum, Linnstrument, more
Roger Linn, a GRAMMY® Award winner for Lifetime Technical Achievement, is a pioneering force whose innovations have shaped the music industry for over four decades. Best known as the creator of the world's first digital drum machine, the LM-1 Drum Computer, Linn’s groundbreaking work has left an indelible mark on popular music. His instruments can be heard in the songs of legendary artists like Prince, Sting, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Depeche Mode, and Michael Jackson. Without Roger’s contributions, who knows how different popular music would sound today?
Linn's legendary drum machines, such as the LinnDrum and Linn 9000, revolutionized music production by combining digital sampling and sequencing. Songs like "Thriller," "Beat It," and "When Doves Cry" are just a few of the iconic tracks powered by Roger Linn's drum machines.
His collaboration with Akai on the MPC (Music Production Center) series became the backbone of hip-hop, electronic, and pop music. Hip-hop owes a particular debt to the MPC, with artists like André 3000 of OutKast even naming himself after the MPC 3000 — a testament to its iconic status. Producers such as J Dilla, Kanye West, Flying Lotus, and Metro Boomin have all used the MPC as their main instrument.
Today, Roger continues to push the boundaries with his latest invention, the LinnStrument. This advanced MIDI controller uses MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) technology, providing musicians with an unprecedented level of control over pitch, tone, and expression. It allows artists to play digital instruments with the same expressiveness as acoustic ones, moving beyond simple "on/off switches" in electronic music to a new realm of creativity and freedom.
